The day a memo was leaked concerning the upcoming Roe v. Wade decision by the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) was a sad day for American justice. It was the first time in the history of the Court that such a breech of confidentiality had occurred. It exemplifies a growing lack of integrity that exists among our elected, and appointed, members of government. The SCOTUS is perhaps the last area of government in which Americans still have faith. Now, thanks to one selfish jerk, the reputation of that institution is under attack. It is too early for us to fully understand how this one action will change how the SCOTUS operates going forward. Already the Justices who supposedly voted to overturn the law, and their families, are being threatened. It doesn’t matter for whom the leaker worked. What matters is that when they are caught they face swift, and severe punishment.
The leak has also, thus far, been bad for the Democrat Party. The Democrat President of the United States has yet to issue a statement condemning those who are threatening Supreme Court Justices, and their families. Democrats are panicking as they warn constituents, completely without basis, that inter-racial and gay marriages, are in jeopardy because of this ruling. When facts don’t support their rhetoric they resort to fear mongering. The leak forces Democrat legislators and candidates to take a stand for an issue that a majority of American people are against. The only way to defend an issue that involves the death of innocent, unborn, children is with emotion and by manipulating statistics. Here’s one you should know. Since the 1973 Roe ruling, over 63 million unborn babies have been killed by abortions. That is a tragedy.
A short historical recap might be instructive. In 1973 the Roe v Wade SCOTUS decision struck down federal and state abortion laws. It also laid out a few guidelines pertaining to when abortions could, and couldn’t, be performed. It said that states could not prohibit the termination of 1st trimester pregnancies for any reason. It said that states could put certain “health requirements” in place before allowing 2nd trimester abortions. It prohibited 3rd trimester abortions entirely unless the health, or life, of the mother was in danger. SCOTUS revisited Roe in 1992. In their ruling they scrapped the trimester language in favor of a standard based on “fetal viability”. It was in 1992 that President Clinton said that: “abortions should be safe, legal, and rare.” Abortions provided by doctors are generally safe, Roe made them legal, but they are far from rare. Every year since 1992 there have been over 800,000 unborn babies killed through abortion.
Democrats, and pro choice advocates, insist the majority of Americans are in favor of abortion. That depends on what question you ask. If the question is: Are you in favor of abortion at any time throughout a pregnancy, including the 3rd trimester? When asked that question, the Associated Press reports that 80% of Americans are against abortions. What the pro choice movement doesn’t tell us is that they favor abortion on demand up to and including the day of delivery. Democrats insist that the pending reversal will remove a woman’s right to an abortion. Of course that is pure nonsense. A reversal of Roe simply sends the decision concerning abortion back to the citizens of each state. They say the pending ruling threatens democracy itself. Comments like that show their desperation and their ignorance. What is more democratic, the ruling of nine unelected people who live in a virtual bubble, or the votes of citizens made in each state? Everyone, including advocates of pro choice know the answer.
It is amazing how people can be totally ebullient about a decision making body in 1973, and completely hostile about a decision made by the same body in 2022. In 1973, after the SCOTUS ruled in favor of abortion, the pro choice movement rejoiced in the wisdom of the Court. Pro lifers, while angry and in disbelief, did not threaten the Justices who voted in favor of abortion. They didn’t show up to harass Justices outside of their homes. What they have done is every year since the decision, hundreds of thousands of pro life advocates marched peacefully in the “March for life” protest to the Supreme Court building. As far as the main stream media is concerned it is an annual non event. They haven’t bothered to give it anywhere near the coverage an event this large deserves.
There are fewer excuses today for unwanted pregnancies. Children are much better educated about the cause of, and ways to avoid, getting pregnant. An incredible number of additions in the field of contraception have occurred since 1973. There is a morning after pill that can be used as an emergency contraceptive. Since the Affordable Care Act was passed, many contraceptive options are free.
Thanks to a plethora of new technologies we are able to detect pregnancies earlier. We now know that a babies heart starts beating at about 5 weeks. We had no way of knowing that, even when the SCOTUS revised its ruling in 1992. The “viability of the baby” ruling, combined with new technology should have drastically reduced the age at which a baby could be aborted. It hasn’t.
In closing, no country can call itself civilized if it allows the slaughter of its unborn children. The Washington Post reports that only 7 countries allow abortion on demand after the 20th week of pregnancy. They are Canada, China, Netherlands, North Korea, Singapore, United States, and Vietnam. Not the best list with which to be associated. If the leaked documents prove to be accurate the SCOTUS will have corrected a mistake made over 50 years ago. If threats made by the pro choice thugs are successful in changing the minds of the Justices, the United States will no longer be a country ruled by law We will fall under mob rule, and the SCOTUS will become irrelevant. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Thank for reading my current posting. If you found it interesting or informative please tell your friends. Bob
I see that you are very clear on your point of view. One topic, rational arguments, no extra fluff. Well written, sir.
Frank,
Thanks for your comments. Apparently the old saw, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, is incorrect. I am hunkered down for a barrage of negative comments. I have been contacted by 3 people running for the state legislature. They are asking how they might couch their abortion comments to a varied electorate. We’ll see what happens. Thanks again, Bob
I agree with you on almost all… except
The pro life movement has not always been peaceful. There were plenty of instances of violence against doctors and clinics in the past. Unfortunately extremists on both sides of this issue sometimes resort to violence. The environment we live in right now is…for many reasons… one in which people have become more volatile. Violence is not acceptable. Also…as you said…most don’t believe in abortion up until the day of birth. I believe those who believe in abortion but not in late term abortion are part of “the movement”…therefore “the movement” may be unfairly labeled….unless I misunderstood what you were saying… which is always possible. Thanks for continuing to explore controversial issues. Jamie
