I Wonder What Would Happen If . . . ?

Have you ever pondered some of the decisions made by bureaucrats, and our elected representatives? Have you wondered, what did they think would happen? Have you wondered, did they think at all? These people strut around with their noses in the air. They see themselves as the intelligentsia, a kind of nobility. They pass laws that they don’t follow. They expect us to follow their edicts, while ignoring them themselves. These faux leaders confiscate ever larger amounts of our paychecks, then waste the tax dollars making stupid, often self-serving, decisions, They exhibit nothing but scorn, and disdain, for their constituents. They are convinced we aren’t capable of making important decisions on our own. Ask yourself the following questions. Would we deplorables even consider defunding the police? Would those of us who cling to our guns and our bibles, fire nurses in the middle of a pandemic? Would we knuckle draggers reduce domestic gas and oil production in the face of a growing economy? Nobody reading this blog would make such ignorant decisions. Yet those decisions were made by our highly educated, mostly Democrat, elected representatives.

Today I’ll address but one of the above questions. (Taking advice from my friend Frank). I wonder what would happen if we defunded the police in our major metropolitan areas? Before I set out to answer the question, take a minute and answer the question for yourself. Would crime go up, or go down? Would law abiding citizens feel more, or less, safe? Would you defund the police? Keep your answers to those questions in mind as we investigate the results of the decisions made by the intelligentsia. Surely the decisions made by our overlords, the PHDs, CPAs, MBAs, CFPs, etc., who run our government couldn’t be wrong. First let’s see what the little people think about defunding the police.

The vast majority of the people demanding the defunding of the police were Antifa and Black Lives Matter members, Democrat Mayors and city council members. But how did the rest of us feel about it? In a 2020 Arizona State University poll, only 18% of Americans favored defunding the police. More telling, only 28% of black people were in favor. Black people are acutely aware of the critical importance to their safety that goes along with the presence of the police in their neighborhoods. But the geniuses who are in charge knew better. In late 2020 they charged full speed ahead and began ridding our cities, not of criminals, of law enforcement officers. At least 20 of our largest cities began reducing the size of their police forces. So what happened?

Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Oakland, CA., Philadelphia, Portland, OR., San Francisco, and Seattle, removed from $9 million to $1 billion dollars from police budgets. Many of those cities have seen wholesale resignations and retirements from their police forces. You and I knew what would happen. Not surprisingly, murders in all metropolitan areas rose 35% in 2020 over 2019. The defunding movement didn’t start until the second half of 2020. It is, therefore, logical to think that for the entire year 2021 there will be another increase. In fact, the cities listed above saw an approximate 20%+ increase in 2021 over 2020. The cities listed above combined for a total of 2,890 murders in 2021. You and I knew that would happen. The really smart people stood slack jawed in disbelief when these numbers were reported. Worse yet, they looked for any excuse to blame the increase on. It couldn’t be their stupidity they brayed. It must be COVID they whined. Always somebody else was to blame.

It isn’t just murders that are up. Nearly every serious crime is up significantly. Aggravated assault, rape, motor vehicle theft, robbery, and burglary, are at all time highs. People in San Francisco are leaving their car windows down, and their trunks open, hoping that thieves won’t tear their vehicles apart trying to find something worth stealing. Police warned citizens in L.A. that wearing expensive jewelry around town could make them targets for thieves. Thugs enter expensive retail outlets and strip the shelves bare, knowing there will be no consequences. Innocent people are being assaulted on the streets and in subways, for their valuables. Or for no reason at all. There are too few police officers to respond in a timely manner. Still more of them are no longer proactive in their police work because they are not sure if their bosses have their backs. They understand that most arrests result in the criminal not being charged, and being released back on the street in a matter of hours.

While hundreds of Americans are murdered, and thousands more injured every year, our politicians are absorbed in passing inconsequential bills. For instance, they just passed a bill that makes lynching a hate crime. When was the last time you read about someone getting lynched? They posture over issues that are more important to them, than to their constituents. In parts of the United States of America people are afraid to go out to eat, or to go shopping. They’re afraid to allow their children to play outdoors. It started in big cities, then moved to suburbia. If our politicians don’t get off their behinds and begin to rein in the unprecedented lawlessness, you can bet your life it is coming to rural America. I hope you found this blog interesting and informative. If you did please share it with your friends. Thank you, Bob
