“You Don’t Know What You’ve Got Til It’s Gone.” Part Of The Lyrics To A 1960’s Joni Mitchell Song.

I intended to post a blog about the Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe V. Wade today. Then I saw the disappointing findings of a recent Gallup Poll about patriotism, or the lack thereof, in America. That poll led to my decision, on this 4th of July weekend, to write about how great this nation really is. And what we must do to keep it that way. My thoughts on Roe V. Wade will appear this Thursday.

The Gallup Poll I referenced asked citizens: are you extremely proud, very proud, moderately proud, only a little proud, or not proud at all to be an American? Gallup has completed this poll every year since 2001. The 2022 poll numbers are not as disappointing in their totality as they are in continuing a trend. Just 38% of those polled said they are extremely proud to be Americans. Another 27% claimed to be very proud. That means that 65% of us are either extremely, or very, proud of our country. If this were the first time the poll had been taken it might not be so alarming. But the 2022 numbers represent an annual decline. (This confuses those of us who believe how blessed we are to be living in the USA). In fact, the 38% who said they are extremely proud is the lowest percent since the polling began. From a political point of view the number of people who say they are extremely, or very, proud look like this: Republicans, 84%, Independents, 62%, and Democrats, 52%. Gallup’s polling has shown that Democrats have perennially been the least likely to say they were extremely proud to be American. This might help explain why they are constantly trying to “fundamentally change” the greatest nation on earth!

Why don’t more of us recognize how lucky we are? Why don’t the wealthiest, most spoiled and pampered, people in the world understand what a blessing it is to have been born in the USA? If you are an American citizen you are the winner of the most important lottery in the world. That is the life lottery! There is no place on earth where a child, any child from any background, has a better opportunity to fulfill their dreams than the U.S. Ask yourself, why do millions upon millions of people from all over the world give up their life savings, and risk their lives, to get here? What do they know that we don’t?

We mustn’t confuse our feelings for our country with our dislike of the government. The title of this blog was chosen because I fear we are losing the freedoms our country’s Constitution guarantees. If we lose our freedoms it will be at the hands of politicians WE blindly choose to represent us. I fear that We the People don’t care, or don’t recognize, that our freedoms are being erased.

The easiest way to lose our freedoms is to allow our elitist leaders to steal our voice. That is happening at a frightening pace right now. Were we asked if we wanted to completely stop producing fossil fuels in our country? Would we have done so before establishing replacements? Of course not! It takes highly educated tyrants to make such a careless, harmful, decision. Our elites are not far from ordering us to cut back on energy use because of shortages they created by reducing domestic fossil fuel production. That will not be a problem for them. Elites will continue to have access to the energy they need to fly private jets, and heat and cool, multiple mansions. Prices for food, fuel, and other essentials, will not retreat to their pre-COVID levels. High prices will help elites control us. As more of us need assistance for our daily needs, we will be forced to seek help from the government. That is when we lose our status as citizens.

The American people understood the initial 2 week lockdown to “flatten the curve” at the onset of the COVID pandemic. That the government continued to punish its citizens for the better part of 2 years grew harder for citizens to accept. Millions of Americans lost their life savings, and their businesses during this time. School children, the least affected by the disease, were severely punished by being forced to stay home for up to 2 school years. A presidential election, that may have changed the future of our nation, was altered when elites changed rules just prior to the election. Then came the vaccine mandates. Never before had our government required people to take an experimental medication as a requisite for staying employed. This experiment in government control was met with very little resistance from we free citizens. It was but a testing of the waters in what will be future government declared pandemics.

You think that is bad? President Biden is quietly preparing the groundwork to hand partial control of our health care system over to the World Health Organization (WHO). If he is successful it will also take away American sovereignty. The plan would give the authority to the WHO to declare an “international health emergency” worldwide, or in any individual country. That would give the WHO the power to force mandates, sanctions, or anything else it deems necessary, on U.S. citizens. No debate. No discussion. Never in the history of this great nation have we willingly forfeited our sacred sovereignty to anyone, let alone unelected elitist foreign bureaucrats. I don’t care your political affiliation. This should scare the hell out of all of us. That our President, dementia addled or not, is even thinking about doing this is unconscionable.

The Progressive Left is involved in an all out frontal attack on our freedoms. They are pushing to pack the Supreme Court, change the way laws are passed in the Senate, get rid of the Electoral College, remove the right for states to write election laws, take away our right to bear arms, and more. If the 65% who said they are extremely, or very, proud to be Americans will join as one we can stop the unquestionable move by government to take away our freedoms. We must all come together as free Americans, even if our politicians find it beneficial to keep us fighting. We must identify those candidates who vow to put Americans ahead of foreigners. Those incumbents who refuse to do so must be put out to pasture. This year, starting tomorrow on Independence Day, let’s pledge to do a better job of knowing who the candidates are, and what they represent. When we identify those candidates who put America first let’s do everything we can to get them elected. If you can make a donation do so. If you can’t write a check then sign up to make phone calls, or knock on doors, for that candidate. Put their sign in your front yard. We are that point in time when electing the right people is critical to the future of our country, and freedom for our progeny. Being a patriot has nothing to do with loving your government. It is all about the love of one’s country. It is but a start to speak of your outrage on social media. If you really care you will take the time to make a difference.

At least for one day, Independence Day, let’s promise to stop whining and think about how blessed we are to live in this great country. Let’s think about what we can do to keep it that way. Then think about how awful it would be should we lose the freedom and liberty we enjoy today. This Independence Day celebrate your freedom like you’re on the verge of losing it. It is hard to imagine, but it will happen if we allow it to. We won’t know what we’ve got til it’s gone. Thank you for taking the time to read my latest blog. I hope you will tell your friends about the importance of working to make a difference in the future of our country. Happy Independence Day, Bob

Timing is everything. Being a patriotic all my life I’m appalled by the poll. I don’t understand it. It must change and it should start at home and in our school systems.

      Bill,
You are absolutely right my friend. It must start at home where we can have an immediate impact. When I am with my grandchildren I always make it a point to talk about the things that make America special. I tell them about the sacrifices their ancestors made so that they might be free. They are always very interested in the stories I tell them about history. Every patriot should do the same with their progeny. It is critical that we demand changes in our schools. The problem with that is that it takes longer to see results. We still need to do it. Thanks for the patriotic work you and Nancy do. We need a few million more just like you two. Bob

Thanks. Have a great patriotic day tomorrow. We’ll be celebrating first thing at the concert at the fountain in Marshall where both of my niece’s husbands will proudly stand when their military song is played. Sam for his service in the Army and Matt for his service in the Marines. We are all devoted and loyal Americans who love this country and totally appreciate the reality that we won the lottery when we were fortunate enough to have been born here.

      Vicki,
We had a great day. Our oldest son and his wife had a baby on 7/2. We left on 7/4 and spent the evening in PA. with them. We will be here the rest of the week. I pray for our country every night. As much as I believe in the power of prayer, I fear that won’t be enough. The majority of Americans are proud of their country. We are going to have to do more than fly a flag. We must step up and be counted. I feel a slight sea change in that direction but it must quickly pick up momentum. Thanks for continuing to read my blogs. It helps me continue to write when I know that people who’s opinion I respect are reading it. Bob
