There is a famous old quote that is absolutely appropriate for what Americans are experiencing today. It is credited to philosopher George Santayana. It goes like this: “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it”. So now, 245 years after winning our independence from the King of England, we are allowing our government to take away the freedoms our forefathers fought to achieve. I fear we are fast approaching that point where we will lose the ability to peacefully save the greatest nation on earth from becoming another dictatorial state. What follows is a short review of a few of today’s similarities to 1776 as they relate to the quote above.
Let’s begin with a look at history, and the teaching thereof. All across this great country we are watching silently as important historical statues are being defaced, destroyed, or removed, from the public square. The discussion as to whether some people may be offended is irrelevant. They are what they are. Each statue depicts a person, or event, who/that was significant at a given point in time in our history. The positive, and negative, impact the statue had on our country create potential teachable moments. Those interested in teaching the honest history of our nation must rely on all of that history. Any effort to remove historical statues, or markers, without the approval of local citizens must not be allowed.
We must approach our local schools to ascertain if they support, or teach, history using the drivel known as the “1619 Project”. Most scholars of history, liberals and conservatives alike, have debunked the project as completely incorrect.. That has not slowed the increasing number of schools that have opted to teach this false history to students. If we expect our students to learn accurate history it is incumbent on us to ensure that we teach them accurate history. Let’s get together with school superintendents and heads of curricula to begin the process of removing this rot from our schools.
Our Founding Fathers understood the importance of liberty and freedom. So they wrote our Constitution, and Bill of Rights, to protect us from overreach by the Federal Government. What a great legacy our ancestors have left. The Founders, and patriots, lined up against the British to secure their freedom from a Monarchy in England. Union soldiers fought the bloodiest war in American history to gain the freedom of slaves. Americans, mostly young kids, fought to save our freedom, and the the freedom of the western world, in WWII. All of them would be utterly appalled at how easily future generations would fritter away the freedom for which so many Americans have died. We meekly follow the insane COVID mandates laid down by elected, and unelected, representatives. We were told that we must stay in our homes. We were told that we must wear a mask, or two, wherever we went. Businesses were forced to close, ruining many American families lives. Children were forced to miss as much as a year and a half of face to face learning in the classroom. Many of them may be going back to school this fall only if they wear masks. One would think that, given the history of heroic Americans, we would simply stand and say NO MORE!
Nowhere in history is there evidence of people living free or prosperous in a Socialist nation. Yet the leadership of the democratic party continues to march us toward Socialism. Educators and politicians don’t think the majority of Americans are capable of making their own decisions. Pampered young people demand respect while whining for the government to pay more of their bills. There is a growing number of lazy ass people who refuse to work. These people can never get enough, and are thus perpetually unhappy. If half of the population lives off the hard work, and generosity, of the other half Socialism is not far away.
It is time for the American people, those carrying the work load, to stand up and get in the faces of our elected representatives. And stay there. We are at a crossroad. If we don’t pay attention to, and learn from, history the greatest experiment in self government in the history of the world will fail. What a terrible shame that will be.
Americans are acting like sheep along with the churches. The world is looking to us for leadership.
Mike,
The free world desperately needs for America to lead the way. But being a leader demands more than just acting like a leader, or saying you are a leader. We must be sure at all times that our friends can trust us, and our enemies fear us. In just 8 months we have caused our allies to doubt our leadership. We have displayed to our enemies the unwillingness to hold them in check. This can not go on much longer without doing irreparable damage to us and the rest of the free world. Thanks for your comments, and your work for the benefit of our country.
