The first law of holes is an adage which states: “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging”. It is meant as a warning to those who find themselves in an untenable position. It warns against making the situation worse. Progressive Left Democrats (PLD) would be well advised to follow this adage. They support allowing boys to shower with girls and to compete on athletic teams designated for girls. Almost none of us agree with that. They support the unvetted entry of illegal aliens entering our country. That too is a minority position. They are fighting to allow non-citizens to vote in our elections. Try to find any citizen who agrees with that foolishness. If you ask them, it is the responsibility of hard working American taxpayers to provide ‘free’ healthcare, education, food, and shelter, to illegal aliens. Only those who think non-citizens should vote agree with that nonsense. Immediately after President Trump announced he would use federal law enforcement to clean up the cesspool that is our national capital, PLDs rushed to their shovels. Law abiding citizens would have to take a back seat while they defend criminals and fight to keep the homeless on the streets. For the sake of the Democrat Party somebody needs to tell them about the first law of holes.
Washington D.C. is different than any other city in the U.S. The Constitution called for the creation of a “federal district” that would be under the jurisdiction of Congress. It is not part of any state. When the Resident Act was adopted in July of 1790 it created the capital district. But it wasn’t until 1973 that the city elected a mayor, and 13 city council members. Unlike in other U.S. cities, Congress retains the power to overturn local laws. According to the 2020 census, D.C. had a population of around 700,000 people. Our nation’s capital is also different in that it serves as a sort of historic showcase of the unique evolution that is our Republic. It serves as a symbol for what freedom loving people can achieve. Unlike any other U.S. city, it is the People’s City. As if to prove that point, more than 20 million Americans, and over 1 million foreigners, visit the city annually. As free and prosperous people we expect to have a certain pride in our capital city.
After many years of abuse, neglect, and idiotic policies, our nation’s capital has become a dangerous embarrassment. Take a look at just a few of the policy changes that have recently occurred. In 2020, the D.C. City Council approved the Sanctuary Values Act. That Act restricts cooperation between local law enforcement and Immigration & Customs Enforcement. In 2023 the City Council passed the SAFE-T Act creating a system of no cash bail. That gives judges the authority to release individuals accused of certain felonies and violent misdemeanors without posting bail if they don’t pose a threat to the community. Read that last sentence again, then ask yourself: Aren’t individuals accused of felonies and violent misdemeanors, by definition, usually a threat to the community? The D.C. police department has seen reduced numbers since 2020. Their goal this year is to hire 20 new officers a month. That may be a good goal, but it falls short of the 35 officers they are losing each month. It doesn’t help when D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s 2024 budget cuts police funding by 2%. Add to that the cities refusal to prosecute offenders under the age of 18. Understanding that, gangs are actively recruiting juveniles to do their dirty work. One needn’t possess a degree in criminal justice to have predicted the outcome of that idiotic collection of policies. Enter President Trump.
Immediately, the PLDs and the main stream media lit up with statistics showing that crime in D.C. was on the decline. (Notice that the incidence of violent crimes has gone down since the PLDs changed the definition of violent and crime). Crime stats have fallen from horrendous to terrible, depending on your timeline. Murders exceeded 200 in 2021 and 2022. Carjackings increased by 200% from 2020 to 2022. Most violent crimes peaked in 2023. The charts being used to support the argument of reducing crime were conveniently taken against the worst year on record. That is a specious argument. It is reminiscent of when President Biden’s policies sent inflation soaring to a 40 year high of 9%. The media was silent until inflation retreated to around 6%. Biden’s policies were touted for bringing inflation down 33%. At 6% the rate was still 3 times what it was when he took office. Specious indeed.
From 2020 thru 2023 there were 2,227 reported carjackings. That approaches 2 a day. The D.C. carjacking task force reported that 66% of carjacking arrests involve juveniles. Many of these juveniles are reportedly just having fun with friends. It’s a game to them. Others have been recruited by gangs. Either way, they do what they do because they recognize there will be no consequences. Here’s a rhetorical question. How fast would you drive your car if you knew you couldn’t get a ticket? If Trump is going to clean up D.C., he must demand that Congress rescind any laws that make it impossible to prosecute all who break the law, regardless of age.
The homeless population consists largely of drug addicts, the mentally ill, layabouts, and those dealing with short term setbacks. Most have made bad decisions. They are free to make their own decisions. They can’t escape the consequences of those decisions. Still, whatever the cause, we must attempt to help them. It is estimated there are 5,000+ homeless people in D.C. Trump has said he will eliminate homeless encampments there. His press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said inhabitants will be offered the option to leave encampments, to be taken to homeless shelters, or offered addiction or mental health services. For context, Leavitt said the U.S. Park Police have closed 70 homeless encampments over the last 5 months in D.C. All inhabitants were given those same options. D.C. citizens and tourists should not have to endure blight, stench, panhandling, and harassment, in order to visit out nation’s capital. Perhaps Trump’s team can develop a model that other cities dealing with an epidemic of homelessness can follow. We should all pray for that to happen.
Most reading this blog, me included, can’t fathom the negative impact that persistent crime has on the residents of D.C.’s quality of life. Not so much on those who write laws. They live in gated communities and are surrounded by armed security. It is the common people who are forced to suffer under those thoughtless laws. It is always the lower class that bears the brunt of constant lawlessness. D.C. citizens report a fear of leaving their residences after dark. They feel compelled, for safety purposes, to do their shopping during daylight hours. Imagine the fear you would have if you were shopping during those daylight hours, when all of a sudden organized thieves enter the business you are in and ransack the store. Because of incessant thievery everything is under lock and key when you visit your local CVS store. To purchase everyday products, you must find a clerk to unlock the item. I can’t imagine not stopping at a traffic light in the city because there were a couple of teenage boys, potential carjackers, standing on the corner. This is a situation that simply must be remedied. Mayor Bowser and her city commission has for years repeatedly dropped the ball on protecting D.C. citizens. It is time for President Trump to give it a try.
It is tragic to watch people carrying signs and demanding that Trump and the National Guard leave town. These are clearly not the people being terrorized by criminal thugs. One would have to believe that many of the protestors are being paid. I bet there are millions of citizens in other lawless big cities who are secretly wishing that Trump will make their city his next target. What is going to happen is there will be a flood of additional law enforcers available to put a halt to those who have brutalized innocent people. The goal is to make citizens feel safer and to clean up D.C. To the ignoramus Dem. politicians, members of the press/media, and those fools marching and waving signs, I ask one last rhetorical question. When was the last time you felt less safe in the presence of additional security? Reducing crime should not be a partisan issue. So I say to the PLD, stop digging and join Trump in making Washington D.C. the beautiful city the American people deserve.
